Florida Health Insurance Marketplace explained
Plan G is a Medicare Supplement plan that covers nearly all of the out-of-pocket gaps left by Original Medicare, apart from the Part B deductible.
Metal tiers, in plain words
Plans are labelled Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum by how costs are shared: Bronze has the lowest premium and the highest deductibles; Platinum flips that. Silver carries a special role — with subsidies, a Silver plan can unlock extra cost-sharing help that other tiers do not.
Subsidies: the part that decides most budgets
Premium tax credits are calculated from your expected household income against the federal poverty level, and they apply the moment you enroll — you never pay the subsidy back as a surcharge; it is reconciled on your tax return. The subsidised price, not the sticker, is what should drive your comparison.
Networks and county availability
Each carrier sells a different roster by county, so the plan your relative in Tampa has may not exist in Lee County. Check that your doctors and hospitals are in-network before comparing premiums — an out-of-network surprise is the most expensive kind.
Special enrollment periods
Outside the annual window, losing job coverage, moving, marrying or adding a family member opens a special enrollment period — usually 60 days around the event. Enroll with proof of the event and the effective date is usually the first of the next month.
Agent help costs you nothing extra
Licensed agents are appointed and paid by the carriers, so using one changes neither your premium nor your plan options — it adds a human who can run the subsidy math and network checks with you.
