Florida Health Insurance FAQ

Straight answers to the questions Florida buyers ask most — ACA enrollment, Medicare timing, Medigap versus Advantage, group plans, costs, and networks. For background on each coverage type, start with our Florida health insurance overview.

Enrollment

When can I enroll in an ACA Marketplace plan in Florida?

Most Floridians enroll during the annual Open Enrollment Period each fall. Outside that window you generally need a qualifying life event — losing other coverage, moving, marriage, or the birth of a child — to trigger a Special Enrollment Period. Details: ACA Marketplace Florida guide.

I am turning 65 in Florida. When should I enroll in Medicare?

Most people enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period: the three months before, the month of, and the three months after their 65th birthday month. Delaying Part B without creditable coverage can trigger late-enrollment penalties.

Can I get coverage if I have pre-existing conditions?

ACA Marketplace plans and Medicare cannot deny you for pre-existing conditions. Medigap plans outside guaranteed-issue windows and some supplemental products can ask health questions, so time those applications carefully.

Plan Choices

What is the difference between Medigap Plan G and Medicare Advantage?

Medigap Plan G works alongside Original Medicare with broad provider access. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private bundled plan, usually within a defined network. The right choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel, and budget.

HMO or PPO — which network type should I pick?

HMOs cost less and require in-network care with referrals. PPOs cost more and cover out-of-network care at higher cost-sharing. The deciding question is whether your current doctors are in-network under each finalist plan.

What does final expense insurance cover?

Final expense insurance is small whole-life coverage typically used for funeral and burial costs and other end-of-life expenses, usually simplified issue with no medical exam.

Employers and Costs

Do Florida small businesses have to offer group health insurance?

Employers with 50 or more full-time equivalents generally must offer affordable coverage. Smaller firms choose coverage voluntarily — group plans, ICHRA, or QSEHRA. Details: Florida small business guide.

How much does health insurance cost in Florida?

Premiums vary by plan tier, age, county, carrier network, and whether subsidies apply. Compare total annual cost — premium plus deductible plus expected cost-sharing — not premium alone. Agent help with Marketplace enrollment is free to consumers.
